THEORIES OF ASIAN ARCHITECTURE

ARC 60704

Tutor: Mr. Koh

This module teaches the elements of environmental issues and circumstances with a focus on how human activity affects the environment, both pleasantly and adversely, as well as how buildings interact with the natural system. Additionally, this subject seeks to assist students in developing acceptable, comfortable, and environmentally sensitive building designs.

PROJECT 01: CONTEXTUAL STUDY SKETCH JOURNAL OF A TRADITIONAL STREET

REFLECTION

In this evaluation, we learned about the various methods to interpret the expressions of traditional streets, whether through the material characteristics of the space and architecture or the abstract socio-cultural connotations. In my case, I had selected Jalan Tun Hs Lee on KL's main thoroughfare. The following step is to define the physical and non-physical surroundings and present our findings via a sketch notebook and written report.

This allowed us to comprehend the particular conditions that make up the distinctive place identity and evaluate the connection between architecture and its social, cultural, and intellectual context in the Asian region.

ASSIGNMENT : INFOGRAPHIC

In this assessment, we were required to create an infographic based on our knowledge of the traditional and vernacular architecture that was covered in this module, including traditional Chinese, traditional Indian, vernacular Malay, and Southeast Asian architecture. In order to demonstrate my understanding of design thinking, the impact of cosmology, history, society, and culture on the production and development of architecture, building typology, spatial layout conception, structures, materials, and constructions, I have chosen to concentrate on traditional Chinese architecture for this assignment. I was able to describe the historical development of traditional Chinese architecture in response to its indigenous environments through evaluation, analysis, design, and organising of the gathered knowledge.

REFLECTION

This task gave me the chance to think back on and summarise the course material, which largely relates to the evolution of traditional and vernacular architecture in Asian cultures. This task has, in my perspective, been interesting and fun, and it has helped me communicate ideas more infographically. I'm grateful and appreciative of the infographic-making materials our tutor offered, which were quite useful when it came time to finish this task.

PROJECT 2: POSTER AND SEMINAR-CONTEMPORARY ISSUES AND ASIAN ARCHITECTURE

In order to grasp the tradition, modernity, and globalisation in Asian architectural contexts, we were asked to create a research poster and a seminar presentation for this assessment. We were tasked as a group of six with identifying the key problems seen in Project 01 and advancing our research in one of many possible directions. Our group decided to concentrate Conservation of Heritage Buildings Through Adaptive Reuse to prevent the Loss of Architectural Identity in Jalan Tun Hs Lee.

To identify our topic of study and come up with a good research title, we had to perform thorough literature studies after deciding on our route. We had to create a topic proposal, an A1-sized research poster, and a video presentation using our study and findings. In order to interpret development issues of contemporary Asian architecture built upon the themes of tradition, modernity, and globalisation, it is expected that participants in this project will be able to describe historical developments of vernacular architecture that respond to their indigenous contexts.

REFLECTION

As a group, we had the chance to work on this evaluation, which served as a good reminder of the need of cooperation in attaining our intended outcomes quickly and effectively. I was able to improve my communication abilities through this project because we had to present and talk about our study topic in meetings and conversations. Aside from that, I want to express my gratitude to everyone in my group for their cooperation, responsibility, and timely completion of the tasks allocated to them as well as for their individual contributions to the success of this project.
